Lingerie as outerwear. Ok so I know this is nothing new but a little while ago I helped a lady shop for some lingerie only to find she thought she couldn’t wear the nicer bras out of the boudoir, this puzzled me as the bra she was referring to was a simple black and nude balconette style with polkadot mesh. Was this what most women thought about shopping for bras that weren’t smooth t-shirt bras?
I also recently saw a post on lingerie as outerwear and it was so wrong! I just don’t think wearing an underwire bra on the outside of your top looks right nor is it giving any support. It all just rubbed me the wrong way so I thought I’d put my own up there in the internet world.
So it was time. The sun was hiding and the temperature was just cool enough to dress up and take some photos, here are my beginner tips.
The HarnessMaze x harness by Bijoux Indiscrets $65
I don’t really wear belts so a harness is probably the closest thing to one in my closet. I usually like to style mine with pretty floral dresses to add a bit of an edge or with t-shirts for a casual day look. They also come in a variety of styles so you can pick one or many to add to your collection.
The High Neck BraRobyn bra by Agent Provocateur
Sometimes lingerie as outerwear can sound a bit confusing. To clarify it doesn’t mean it has to be “Outerwear” per se and you don’t have to have the entire item on exposed either. For me, I don’t really accessorise but I do like to incorporate lingerie into my outfits and if I’m spending quite a bit of $$$ on an item, having the option to show it off is even better.
If wearing lingerie as outerwear is new to you, you could try subtle hints like wearing high neck or strappy bras under a buttoned shirt, or a simple harness under a V neck t-shirt to get things rolling.
Batifolage bra by Chantal Thomass
High neck bras come in so many different styles and fabrics strappy, mesh and lace just to name a few. I usually like to style these with anything that has an open neckline or button up tops, just remember to leave the top few buttons undone for that peek-a-boo effect.
The Strappy BraMadame X soft cup bra by Dita Von Teese $69.95
I’m not really a fan of strapless bras so here is how I like to style strapless items. The strappy bra is a staple item and I think every lingerie drawer has at least one. It adds a little excitement to any plain old vanilla outfit and can pretty much be worn with everything. It’s also a great layering piece.
The BodysuitFelinda bodysuit by Agent Provocateur
The bodysuit is the perfect beginner piece for experimenting as outerwear, it comes in so many different styles, long sleeve, short sleeve, spaghetti strap, halter neck you name it and you’ve got it. I always like to style mine with a pair of high waisted jeans or skirt. If you are still a little shy throw a cardi on top and voila!
Miss West bodysuit by Dita Von Teese $189.95
